Charnock Richard Brass ... Marching On!

Our Band Biography

Charnock Richard Brass was founded in April 2009 by Gayle Coleman in order to create opportunities for people of all ages to learn to play a brass instrument in a fun and friendly environment.  There are two bands in all; Charnock Richard Training Brass (which caters for beginner players and those up to grade 2 standard), and Charnock Richard Brass, a band aimed at more experienced brass players.  We are very fortunate to have a membership of 50 people, with our youngest member being just six years old and our eldest being 70+!! Our members are made up of children from local school, curious parents and those who want to just make music.  We perform quite an eclectic repertoire including music from the Beatles, Queen, John Williams and of course the more traditional brass band marches! Both of the bands are in great demand for concerts and marches and continue to uphold a great reputation within the local and wider community.  As well as our busy musical life the bands also host various social events throughout the year, one of the highlights being our Solo Competition in July, .this year it was judged by John Dickinson, former principal trumpet of the Hallé Orchestra.

If you would like to rekindle an interest in music or learn a new skill, come and join us at Charnock Richard Brass! For more details please go to the contact us section of the website

Our Musical Director - Gayle Coleman

Gayle began playing the cornet when she was eight years old and soon joined Chorley Silver Band.  After switching to the trumpet at high school she joined the Lancashire Students’ Concert Band of which she was a member for six years.  In 2000 Gayle went to study at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) and gained a BMus (hons) degree in 2004.  After further study at the RNCM she gained a Postgraduate Performance diploma in 2005.  During her time at college she performed in various ensembles ranging from the brass band under the guidance of Nicholas Childs and James Gourlay; the Symphony Orchestra under Mark Elder and also contemporary ensembles having the chance to work with Sir Harrison Birtwistle.  In her last year at the RNCM Gayle performed with the Hallé Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra of Opera North. Gayle now works as an Ensemble Development Leader for the Lancashire Music Service, teaching brass throughout Lancashire schools.
